Is Blogging Dead? Why You Need a Blog in 2023

With podcasting, YouTube, and short-form video, you might be wondering why anyone would dare read a blog again. I mean, why read when you can watch, right? Well, not quite. There is an assumption for many business owners that blogging is dead, which couldn’t be further from the truth. I want to chat a little about why blogging is still alive and well, plus how you can make the most of your blog.

Is Blogging Dead?

The short answer? No. Despite the push towards audio and visual platforms, blogging still remains a massive source of traffic and lead generation for 76% of businesses.

Blogging is dead? Most definitely not. Just take it from Dwight.

Personally, I think there are a few reasons for this. First, Google is still a top site for most people to search for content. And while Google will recommend videos, TikToks, and images for search queries, the vast majority of results are for websites and blogs. AKA when people search on Google, blogs are some of the top promoted resources.

Second, I think that blogs serve a specific purpose. For instance, if I have a specific piece of information I’m looking for, I am more likely to read a blog. I can get the information much quicker than watching an entire video or listening to a whole podcast. (Of course, depends on the information.)

Let’s get back at the stats: 77% of internet users still read blogs. So, as I said, blogging isn’t dead. Blogging has changed and evolved over time, but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

How to Make the Most of Your Blog

Hopefully, by now, we can both agree that blogging is not dead! So, how can you make the most of your blog? Blogs can be time-consuming to create, so if you’re going to put in the time, let’s make it worth it.

Here are a few tips to get the most out of blogging:

#1 Do Keyword Research

If you’ve been in the blogging world for more than a minute, you’ve probably heard people talk about keyword research. Keyword research is a part of SEO.

What is an SEO keyword, you ask? Well, it’s a word or phrase that people are searching for. Really anything can be a keyword, but what makes something a good keyword from a bad keyword depends on its competitiveness, cost per click, and traffic.

You can do keyword research for free on UberSuggest (my preferred platform). You want to find keywords that match the topic of your blog, have low competitiveness, and have high search volume.

Every niche is different, though. In some niches, you can expect to see thousands of searches a month, whereas in others, you’re lucky to find something in the 50+ range.

#2 Update Your Blog Consistently

It’s really important that once you begin blogging, you stay on top of it. Building a domain authority (which helps you rank higher in search results) takes a long time. And it will take even longer if you don’t post on a regular basis.

Google needs to see that you consistently put out quality content. It doesn’t want to promote stale blogs. Notice, though, that I said consistently. You get to choose what that means for you. It might mean one blog a month. It might mean four.

#3 Update Old Content

When it comes to blogging, you don’t want to hit it and quit it. Updating blogs throughout time keeps your content relevant and packed full of quality. When you update a blog, you can also reset the date of publishing.

Google actually really likes this, too. When it sees that you’ve made changes to your blog, it registers these updates and notes that the information is fresh and likely more valuable (which, if you haven’t noticed yet, Google really likes).

#4 Quality > Quantity

If I had to summarize blogging in one statement, this would be it. Not only has Google said time and time again that a quality blog is the best thing you can write - but it just makes sense. Why waste your time writing garbage? Why waste your time copying what someone else has already done?

If you’re going to do it, give it your best! Your blog is an opportunity for people to hear your unique perspective and approach. We want to stand out from everyone else online, and a blog is the perfect place to start.
